Lobbying as a Legal Profession

1 hour 34 minutes

Lobbying has long been associated in the public’s mind with corruption, improper influence, secrecy, and corporate power. However, with the growing complexity of governments, whose activities affect all businesses and citizens, the need for advocates to provide timely, accurate, and relevant information to governmental decision-makers is even more acute. And the ability for those affected by government to be able to participate in and have a voice in governmental decisions remains an essential element of participatory democracy. This panel will explore what lobbyists do, how they do it, why lobbying is not only an honorable and valuable — but an essential — profession, and how disclosure laws can help instill public confidence in the profession
